Are you pushing or pulling?

Internet marketing can be confusing to say the least!

Nothing we do in our real lives prepares us to work online, and terms like "autoresponder" or "solo ad" or "CPM" are foreign at best.

And now there’s AI! Inference costs? What the heck is that?

To add to the confusion and information overload there are countless "gurus" handing out conflicting advice. It's enough to make your head spin!

Let me help simplify things a bit.

There are really only two methods of internet marketing: Push marketing and pull marketing.

These are two very different approaches to getting traffic to the sites you promote.

Once you see the difference you will better know where to spend your time and money.

PUSH MARKETING is the proactive type where you use content to push your message out to your audience. Examples are social posting, publishing articles, or YouTube videos.

PULL MARKETING is where you place ads you hope will pull people to your website. Examples include solo ads, newsletter ads, Facebook ads and more.

Let’s look at both quickly.

Push Marketing: Proactive and Fast

Push marketing is about taking your message to your market and grabbing their attention long enough to create interest.

You aren't necessarily selling the product yet … just the click to the website.

  • Examples: Email Marketing, Twitter/X, Pop-ups, Joint Ventures, Facebook posts, videos.

  • The Essentials: You MUST know your target market, ideal buyer profile, create a great headline (or subject line), sell the click, and create curiosity.

BIG ADVANTAGE: Push marketing does not carry hard costs like advertising does.

Pull Marketing: Set It and Forget It

Pull marketing lives in one spot and is seen by many. The ad is never "sent,” or “posted” but rather placed where you hope your audience is searching.

  • Examples: Banner Ads, Pay Per Click (PPC), Search Engine listings, Directories, Native Advertising

  • The Essentials: You MUST choose keywords and sites carefully, use a great headline and image, and create intense curiosity.

Should You Push or Pull?

Generally, push marketing works best for products that meet a specific need of a specific market (like a course on side hustles).

Technically, the people who respond are either Unaware or Problem Aware.

And it only costs time. With AI that cost is now almost zero.

Pull marketing works better for broader topics where people are actively searching (like health, self improvement, succeeding online).

Technically, these people are Solution Aware or Product Aware.

Ultimately, almost all great marketing campaigns use a combination of both.

Whether you push or pull, stay in control and take action.

Most of us start with push and some end up pulling with ads. For me, push marketing has been all I need.

Hope you find this helpful.
